Default Are 3-level ADRs possible in the U.S.

Just curious what hoops you have to jump through to get one, if it is even possible at all. Thinking about going to Germany, but I do live down the road from Dr. McAfee in Baltimore...

Thankfully, after FDA approval, surgeons are free to use the device as they see fit.

Sadly, after FDA approval, surgeons are free to use the device as they see fit.

In the hands of the correct surgeon, it can be a blessing. In other hands, it can be a curse.

In some cases, the hospitals or their risk-management teams will decide what can and can't be done. In other cases, the manufacturer of the device will only allow procedures in 'expanded indications' cases only for surgeons that have proven themselves.

I know surgeons who have done 3-level ADR in the us only after they have had experience with ADR... one other procedure.

It's buyer beware. Some prostheses may be more appropriate than others in some indications... but the surgeons are not always free to use them.

Do your homework... make informed decisions.

Today, as on many other days, I have spoken to a patient who's surgeon told him what is not allowed in the US. Based on this incorrect information (no multi-level ProDisc)... expert advice from a spine expert... the patient is now a victim.

Do your homework, make informed decisions.

Thanks. McAfee is one of the U.S. pioneers, so hopefully he will know what is going on. My inclination is to go to Dr. B, but I would somehow have to come up with the $50K up front before my BC/BS Federal Employee insurance pays him.
