The schmorls nodes are defects in the endplates of the vertebral bodies. In my experience with clients I've been involved with, they are not thought to be painful and were not a significant factor when deciding surgical options. I've seen many people with schmorl's nodes at every lumbar level... some quite large.

My guess is that this is more of an observation than a diagnosis.
